Grafton Base Hospital is a level 3/4 base hospital within the Northern New South Wales Local Health District, providing care to over 15,000 patients each year. The hospital undertakes more than 5,600 surgical procedures and sees around 28,000 Emergency presentations annually.
We provide round the clock cover for the following medical services: Emergency Medicine, Adult Internal Medicine, Paediatrics, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, Intensive care and Anaesthetics.

SHIFT INFORMATION
Emergency Department:
Main Department:
o 10 acute beds
o Dedicated paeds room
o 2 resuscitation beds
o 3 consultation rooms for fast Track patients.
Short Stay Unit SSU (Commences 27 July 2026)
o 6 beds for ED short stay patients
Shift times:
o Specialist in-charge shifts: 0700 1730, 1400 2400, 0800-1830 (SSU)
o Night CMO: 2215 0815
o JMO shifts: 0700 1530, 1200 2030, 1500 2330, 0000 0800 (shared with Gen Med)
o Fast Track shifts: 0730 1600; 1400 2230
o JMO SSU: 1300-2130
Staffing levels for each shift time: 4 staff minimum with cross over in afternoon and evening shift. 1 FACEM, 1 GP and 2 JMOs on day shift and evening shift, 1 JMO midday cover, 1 CMO on evening shift, 1 Night JMO (shared with Gen Med) and SSU staffing has 1 FACEM and 1 JMO per day.
Support provided: Senior staff on each shift. Afternoon FACEM is on call from 0000-0700 daily
Additional Information: Following handover at midnight, there is only one ED in-charge doctor until 0700; JMO support shared with Gen Med 0000-0800
